In 2005 and again in 2008, Erick Lyle and I collaborated and released two issues of Zine Libs. Long out of print, Zine Libs are the result of cross pollinating Mad Libs with stories coming from DIY punk rockers, creating hilarious tales that for some folks, might stir up feelings of deja vu. While technically fictional, the stories are informed by a cornucopia of experiences we had both had (or had heard of), through our "unconventional lifestyles."

A definite must have if you've ever spent time in a collective home, lived with 15 people + 8 pets, have dealt with 6 long term "house-guests," been involved in protests, eaten food out of the trash, squatted, blacked-out, hopped trains, hitch-hiked- or at least have been around these types of activities. Available next week through Pegacorn Press, this new release is both of the issues together as one, which means that it's forty pages of hilarity!

Also available in the coming weeks, issue #25 of Mike Taylor's LATE ERA CLASH. More on that as we get it all printed and put together. The mega laundry list of publications scheduled to be out by CAKE, will be announced soon!

2012 is wrapping up and what a better way to conclude the year (the one where everything was supposed to END), then to release a couple more publications via Pegacorn Press?

Above are a couple pictures of the completed 2013 Paquita Calendar and of Those Fucking Unicorns, by Sy Wagon. I'm overjoyed to be able to print and re-release this for Sy, who is not only a complete "babely" genius, but she's also someone that is continually inspiring, both artistically and in the day to day, "real life," kind of way. 

Those Fucking Unicorns is a mini-publication that is definitely not kid friendly, or for anyone who is not sex friendly in general (lots of cocks in this). Just a little FYI for any potential unicorn lovers who just are into anything that has unicorns in it- this is XXX material, straight up.

To sum it up even further, this is what I have to say about the release of both of these projects, at the same time...
"It's all about love for the ladies and a better understanding on what exactly unicorns do in their spare time to help the transition into 2013, the year where all the previous problems in the world are supposed to disappear..."

Yeah, I'm turning into a crystal loving freak-a-zoid, but that makes for better art, right?

Hoping to update this blog more this year- I seem to be better at maintaining the stores and everything else besides the "blog-o-sphere." Gonna try harder! Just make sure to always check the online stores if you're wondering what's out and available, as those are definitely more up to date...

P.P.S. Womanimalistic #1 has been re-printed finally and is available online. There's more than 2,500 of these floating around and I'm not sure if I'll re-print again. Time to move on!

-----PEGACORN HAS GONE "PRO" AND IS NOW HOUSED IN AN ACTUAL STUDIO--------------------------BLASPHEMY!------------

Having a real studio is a wildly new experience for me, particularly after exclusively working out of my bedroom for years. (Honestly, it's odd to not have a Risograph, or two, in the kitchen anymore, WTF?!) The change is welcomed though, as it's been super nice to have a completely dedicated work-zone and to not have to manage living and working in the same space anymore. Makes one focus more while making art, and helps make a bedroom an actual place to relax- who knew what I was missing all these years?

The new and petite print studio, located near the Brooklyn Navy Yard, has been GREAT. All my printing equipment has finally been moved in and it's only going to be a matter of weeks until some new material starts making it's way out of the machines and into the larger world. It's about time! After months of trying to get back on my feet after my dad passed away, the olde brain is starting to work again after being in total stasis. It's not in perfect shape, but it's doing something, luckily, just in time for the Brooklyn Comics and Graphics Fest coming up on November 10th. Pegacorn Press will be tabling that, and more than likely, our favorite pal/partner in crime, Mike Taylor will be at the table too. The BCGF is always a great way to see new work and meet other comic/printing freaks, so definitely check it out cause it's, "super badass."

Ok- enough with the updates for now. More soon on what releases will actually be done by the BCGF, release events, etc, etc, etc...

A bit about the show in China:

Booklyn Artists Alliance is pleased to announce the opening of DIAMOND LEAVES: Artist Books from around the World. A collaboration between the Booklyn Artists Alliance and the Central Academy of Fine Arts Museum in Beijing, the exhibition is curated by Xu Bing, artist and Vice-President of the CAFAM, and Marshall Weber, artist and Directing Curator of Booklyn; it is the first major museum exhibition of contemporary international Artist Books in China.

A decade in the making, the DIAMOND LEAVES exhibition showcases over 200 masterpieces of the Artist Book form created by more than 100 visual artists, some well known and some emerging, who approach the creation of Artist Books as an interdisciplinary and multi-media practice. Using collage, drawing, painting, photography, printmaking, and digital and social media, artists are creating books that provide us with complicated aesthetic experiences and push the boundaries of book design far beyond the limits of the conventional book’s form. Just as photography liberated painting from its documentary function late in the 19th century, digital media has liberated the book from the burden of operating as a vehicle for text and data, spurring the renaissance of creative bookmaking celebrated by this exhibition.

Focusing on books created in the 21st century, the exhibit demonstrates how an Artist Book can function as both fine art and as an experimental laboratory for global visual language development. The exhibition consists of conceptually, materially and structurally ambitious hand-bound hardcover Artist Books published in limited editions of under 100. Another component of the exhibit features a reconstruction of a Brooklyn-style bookstore of inexpensive, image-based, softcover, populist, intimate, and artist-produced Zines and comic books published in editions of over 100. Other exhibits components contain examples of the early 20th century Soviet constructivist books that revolutionized book and typography design, and a small exquisite selection of antique European and Asian illustrated books that show the trajectory from older book forms to contemporary Artist Books.

Chicago, Coochies, Fermentation, Deals

I'll be participating in the panel discussion, "Start Your Own Micropress," so if you're into such things, it's looking like a great line-up of folks. WOMANIMALISTIC #2: COOCHIE PARTY

A limited edition, work in progress, made originally while doing an artist's residency at the Roberts Street Social Centre (Halifax, Nova Scotia) in October 2011. The first edition of 32 was made using their "people's photocopier" and had a two color screen printed cover. This third edition printing of 300 was printed on my Risograph- the inner guts are printed with blue ink, the inner cover burgundy, while the cover sports both florescent pink and blue. 

The zine itself is all about ladies, "coochie," and random thoughts on oppressive male culture. Some of it is straight from my sketchbook, while some of it is more intentionally drawn. If you like the ladies and can appreciate drawings of lady parts, then this zine is for you!

Since being reproduced in Sandor Katz's new, and truly amazing book, The Art of Fermentation, (Chelsea Green, 2012) it's time to bring this favorite poster back. In celebration, a new edition has been printed on the Risograph this week and it's a great gift for anyone who is into anything fermented. As a total side note, I completely recommend the book itself- and not only because another illustration of mine was used as borders on the cover and in the book (yeah!)- but because Sandy's love of fermenting is completely contagious and will change your life, and taste buds, forever. He really is a gem! It was his book, Wild Fermentation, that inspired this poster to begin with.

A 3 color print (blue, burgundy, and black) on a very light gray paper (the same type that I use for my yearly calendars), it's legal sized, which is 8.5" X 14." 

Each print is unique from another as Risograph printing is always a little irregular. It comes signed on the back and sent flat, with cardboard backing, in a large envelope.

SPRING FEVER: FAG SCHOOL #4 & BURN COLLECTOR #16

I'll be honest: late winter/early spring has been ROUGH and I've just been trying to ride this crazy-wave, without being completely sucked into the insanity.  My pops, who has been seriously ill for many years now, is entering the final stages of his life- as one can expect, it's been a sad and hard process. I've gotten a lot of quality time in with him and am making peace/trying to accept the inevitable, but honestly, there's definitely been those moments where I've thought I might crumble. My poor dad- he's seriously gone through some hard-ass-shit! Even in the worst times though, this man can rally and to this day, he continues to inspire me with his dedication to life, humanity, and to always seeking/exploring/desiring more knowledge, even despite his failing health. An old badass, he is, without a fucking doubt.

That being said, there's nothing like a little work, particularly creative work, to keep you on point. Keep you fresh, inspired, still seeking the light, even when you feel like a gigantic POS. Working with Al and Brontez these past few months have helped to keep me going, kept my brain sharp, and they both deserve big props for being so extremely patient and understanding of all that's been going on. I've had to skip town for family emergencies and then both of my Risographs broke. Printing was delayed, emergency packages sent out with photocopied versions of the publications, endless printing sessions, collating parties with Al... I was feeling this past Mercury in retrograde. It's been a wildly frustrating time, particularly because I've just wanted these publications to exist in a tangible format and every obstacle has popped up. BUT! We're over the hump now, everything is printed and ready to be out in the world, so... many thanks to them, as well as my friends, sweet partner, and family, for helping me through such difficult times and for being so supportive. 

On that note, that I present these new Pegacorn Press releases, FAG SCHOOL #4, and Burn Collector #16, both of which I'm super excited about.

Burn Collector #16 (April 2012) is sub-titled “Music and Mania,” and examines the intersection between creativity and losing your marbles. Street musicians, arena rock, classical vs. computers, Little Richard vs. Elvis, and a wide variety of other topics are discussed as Burian contends that “the modern musician is essentially a maniac, living on a delusional dream, whose basic project– putting forth a unique voice into the general din and calamity of the oversaturated information age– has so little chance of success as to make it an act of ultimate, incredible optimism.” The zine contains comics, essays, reviews, and interviews with musician Tim Remis and radical mental health activist Sascha DuBrul.

Al Burian is the author of the long-running personal zine Burn Collector. His work has garnered praise from such legitimate institutions as the Utne Reader and McSweeneys Best Nonrequired Reading. Beginning in the mid-nineties, Burian has distributed his work through the tight-knit network of the DIY punk music/art scene. He has published 16 issues of the zine, two anthologies, and a book of comics. He has been doing reading/speaking performances since the year 2000.
