<strong>GARDEN OF THE WOMANIMAL</strong><span>
explores a recurring theme throughout the recent years of Caroline's
work, depicted in a wide variety of media, a cult of "womanimals"
half-women/half-wild animals are illustrated in landscapes of playful
sexual scenarios, mystical adventures, and explorations of nature and
the body. The womanimals' corrupt playfulness and exuberance are
contrasted by the meticulously clean line work of Paquita's drawings and
paintings. Newer works are surrounded by thirteen years of imagery
demonstrating the evolution towards this theme and its stylized
representation.</span></div>

an audacious yet welcoming environment of new and past works including
drawings, paintings, screenprints, paper mache, sewn soft sculpture,
kinetic wood sculpture, Risograph prints and zines. The installation is
climaxed by Paquita's new artist book, published exclusively for the
exhibition, compiling years of screenprints, Risograph publishing
ephemera, and drawing reproductions into a beautifully hand-bound
hardcover limited edition.</span></div>

first solo exhibition in New York. Born in Miami in 1980, Caroline
studied creative photography and art history at the University of

Caroline is a musician and an independent publisher working under the
guise Pegacorn Press. Printing exclusively with Risograph since 2009,
she has collaborated with and published work by Al Burian, Anna
Haifisch, Brontez Purnell, Mike Taylor, Sy Wagon, and Lale Westvind.
Coinciding with the exhibition, Caroline and Booklyn are collaborating
on compiling and archiving sixteen years of her self-published zines to

<b><span style="font-size: large;">Intimate Anxiety</span></b></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<b>with Phoebe Gloeckner, Julia Gfrörer, and Heather Benjamin<br />Moderated by Caroline Paquita<br /><i><b>Sponsored by Comix Revolution</b><br />
</i><br />
Beyond the shock tactics of portraying “inappropriate” subject matter in
comics, we find the medium is exquisitely suited for grappling with
explicit content, unchained from the trappings of taboo. Intimate
Anxiety focuses on three artists’ ferocious visions of sex and death,
made all the more visceral through gorgeous and painstaking details.
Special Guest Phoebe Gloeckner sets the standard for work that probes these realms. From her experimental memoir, <i>Diary of a Teenage Girl</i>, to her iconic illustrations for <i>RE/Search</i>
to her current work dealing with the ongoing femicide in Cuidad,
Juárez, Gloeckner continues to confront difficult realities with
groundbreaking graphic integrity. Julia Gfrörer’s art
vibrates off of the page while crafting oblique erotic worlds laced with
terror. Through sparse text and a perfect sense of visual timing,
Gfrörer’s comics, such as <i>Too Dark to See, Flesh and Bone</i> and <i>Black Is the Color</i>
bring language to the unspeakable. Joining them will be Special Guest
Heather Benjamin, whose obsessively rendered drawings aim straight for
the jugular vein. Author of the cult art zine <i>Sad Sex</i> and
contributor to the prolific output of Collective Stench, Benjamin’s art
delves headfirst into complicated scenarios that are emotionally fraught
and sexually feral. Moderated by Caroline Paquita, author of <i>Womanimalistic</i> and founder of <i>Pegacorn Press</i>, Intimate Anxiety is a conversation about the power and truth that lies within impropriety.</b></div>

<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
Been hard at work trying to get the new Risograph stencil duplicator up and running, after being so frustrated with it's condition that I could barely even look at this beautiful monster in my studio. For a hefty price, I bought it off Ebay from a guy who said that it was in "perfect working condition," and was "guaranteed," but upon arrival, I could tell that things were not as he said. A lengthly process ensued with Ebay (a complete disaster and total joke- I have no faith in their "resolution center"), which has led me on a magical journey into the complicated bowels of this thing. WD-40, a tiny hex set and a 450 page tech service manual have been a major part of the process of getting it up and running, as well as some help from my sweetie, <a href="http://johnnycoast.com/" target="_blank">Johnny</a>, who is more mechanically inclined. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I've already spent about five solid days trying to clean up totally dried out screens and have only recently started to mess with THE TIMING issue. <u>TIME!</u> Always a source of complaint in my life, so it makes sense that I'd have to spend time working on timing, meanwhile trying to keep the frustration at bay as my personal workload piles up and I'm covered in solvents and ink. No one has ever said that owning and maintaining printing equipment is a walk on the beach, by any means. This is the trade off for being able to print whatever and whenever I want, right? Right? I've learned that I can't do any of this unless I'm fully caffeinated and have snacks around, otherwise, I'm a hot mess and start thinking about taking a sledgehammer to everything. I won't do it, but this is what tinkering can do to you, especially if you're unsure of what you're doing...</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
After some debating over what certain diagrams and instructions meant, last night we were able to adjust it enough to get it to print a partial print, which is considerably better than it not doing anything at all. It's always a neat process to demystify complicated machinery and with the encouragement from Johnny and my fellow nerds on the Riso list-serve, I've felt more empowered to crack my machines open and tinker on them. Fingers crossed that I can get this new machine operable in the coming weeks, which will mean that I can print 11X17 and will have 5 more colors to work with! </div>

<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: small;">In 2005 and again in 2008, <a href="http://onthelowerfrequencies.com/" target="_blank">Erick Lyle</a> and I collaborated and released two issues of <i>Zine Libs</i>. Long out of print,<i> Zine Libs</i> are the result of cross pollinating <i>Mad Libs</i> with stories coming from DIY punk rockers, creating hilarious tales that for some folks, might stir up feelings of deja vu. While technically fictional, the stories are informed by a cornucopia of experiences we had both had (or had heard of), through our "unconventional lifestyles."<br /><br />A definite must have if you've ever spent time in a collective home, lived with 15 people + 8 pets, have dealt with 6 long term "house-guests," been involved in protests, eaten food out of the trash, squatted, blacked-out, hopped trains, hitch-hiked- or at least have been around these types of activities. Available next week through Pegacorn Press, this new release is both of the issues together as one, which means that it's forty pages of hilarity!<br /><br />Also available in the coming weeks, issue #25 of <a href="http://www.emptymountain.org/indexhibit/" target="_blank">Mike Taylor's</a></span><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: small;"> LATE ERA CLASH. is wrapping up and what a better way to conclude the year (the one

<br />
<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;"><b>Above are a couple pictures of the completed 2013 Paquita Calendar and of <i>Those Fucking Unicorns</i>,

that is continually inspiring, both artistically and in the day to day,

all about love for the ladies and a better understanding on what
exactly unicorns do in their spare time to help the transition into 2013,

disappear..." </b></span><br />

<div style="text-align: center;">
Every single Pegacorn Press release (thus far) made it into this amazing show that Marshall Weber from <a href="http://www.booklyn.org/about.php" target="_blank">Booklyn</a> helped curate in Beijing, China! The first show of it's kind there, I feel honored to have all this Riso work included: </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<b><i><br /></i></b></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<b><i>Fag School</i></b> <b>#4 </b>(listed as <i>New Fiction</i> under Pegacorn Press): Brontez Purnell</div>

<b><i>Burn Collector #16:</i></b> Al Burian</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<b><i>Womanimalistic #1 +2</i></b>: Caroline Paquita</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<b><i>Late Era Clash #24</i></b>: Mike Taylor</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<b><i>Future Tense</i></b>: <span class="Apple-style-span" style="line-height: 18px;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Times, 'Times New Roman', serif;">Edie Fake, Jo Dery, Anna Haifisch, Mike Taylor, Sy Wagon, Roby Newton, Josh Bayer, Al Burian, James Turek, Kasey Henneman + Caroline Paquita</span></span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Big thanks to Marshall, as well as to the artists that I've worked with over this past year.<br />
Printed matter is still alive and thriving, despite what you may have heard.<br />
<br />
<b><br /></b>
<b>-----<span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: cyan;">PEGACORN HAS GONE "PRO" AND IS NOW HOUSED IN AN ACTUAL STUDIO</span>--------------------------<span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: red;">BLASPHEMY!</span>------------</b><br />
<br />
Having a real studio is a wildly new experience for me, particularly after exclusively working out of my bedroom for years. (Honestly, it's odd to not have a Risograph, or two, in the kitchen anymore, WTF?!) The change is welcomed though, as it's been super nice to have a completely dedicated work-zone and to not have to manage living and working in the same space anymore. Makes one focus more while making art, and helps make a bedroom an actual place to relax- who knew what I was missing all these years?<br />
<br />

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Spirit duplicator+ stencil duplicator+ decade old laser printer= printmaking wingnut</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<br />
The new and petite print studio, located near the Brooklyn Navy Yard, has been GREAT. All my printing equipment has finally been moved in and it's only going to be a matter of weeks until some new material starts making it's way out of the machines and into the larger world. It's about time! After months of trying to get back on my feet after my dad passed away, the olde brain is starting to work again after being in total stasis. It's not in perfect shape, but it's doing something, luckily, just in time for the <a href="http://www.comicsandgraphicsfest.com/" target="_blank">Brooklyn Comics and Graphics Fest </a>coming up on November 10th. Pegacorn Press will be tabling that, and more than likely, our favorite pal/partner in crime, Mike Taylor will be at the table too. The BCGF is always a great way to see new work and meet other comic/printing freaks, so definitely check it out cause it's, "super badass."<br />
<br />
Ok- enough with the updates for now. More soon on what releases will actually be done by the BCGF, release events, etc, etc, etc...<br />
<br />
Goodbye Glorious Summer, but hello Autumnal Equinox!<br />
<br />
XOXO,<br />

<div style="text-align: center;">
A bit about the show in China:</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<i>Booklyn Artists Alliance is pleased to announce the opening of
<a href="http://www.booklyn.org/news/000632.php" target="_blank">DIAMOND LEAVES: Artist Books from around the World</a>. A collaboration
between the Booklyn Artists Alliance and the Central Academy of Fine
Arts Museum in Beijing, the exhibition is curated by Xu Bing, artist and
Vice-President of the CAFAM, and Marshall Weber, artist and Directing
Curator of Booklyn; it is the first major museum exhibition of
contemporary international Artist Books in China.</i></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<i>A decade in the making, the DIAMOND LEAVES exhibition showcases over
200 masterpieces of the Artist Book form created by more than 100 visual
artists, some well known and some emerging, who approach the creation
of Artist Books as an interdisciplinary and multi-media practice. Using
collage, drawing, painting, photography, printmaking, and digital and
social media, artists are creating books that provide us with
complicated aesthetic experiences and push the boundaries of book design
far beyond the limits of the conventional book’s form. Just as
photography liberated painting from its documentary function late in the
19th century, digital media has liberated the book from the burden of
operating as a vehicle for text and data, spurring the renaissance of
creative bookmaking celebrated by this exhibition.</i></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<i>Focusing on books created in the 21st century, the exhibit
demonstrates how an Artist Book can function as both fine art and as an
experimental laboratory for global visual language development. The
exhibition consists of conceptually, materially and structurally
ambitious hand-bound hardcover Artist Books published in limited
editions of under 100. Another component of the exhibit features a
reconstruction of a Brooklyn-style bookstore of inexpensive,
image-based, softcover, populist, intimate, and artist-produced Zines
and comic books published in editions of over 100. Other exhibits
components contain examples of the early 20th century Soviet
constructivist books that revolutionized book and typography design, and
a small exquisite selection of antique European and Asian illustrated
books that show the trajectory from older book forms to contemporary
Artist Books.</i></div>

<b>A limited edition, work in progress, made originally while doing an
artist's residency at the <a href="http://www.robertsstreet.org/" target="_blank">Roberts Street Social Centre</a> (Halifax, Nova
Scotia) in October 2011. The first edition of 32 was made using their
"people's photocopier" and had a two color screen printed cover. This
third edition printing of 300 was printed on my Risograph- the inner
guts are printed with blue ink, the inner cover burgundy, while the
cover sports both florescent pink and blue. </b><br />
<b><br />The zine itself is
all about ladies, "coochie," and random thoughts on oppressive male
culture. Some of it is straight from my sketchbook, while some of it is
more intentionally drawn. If you like the ladies and can appreciate
drawings of lady parts, then this zine is for you! <br /></b><b>8.5 X 5.5 in, saddle stitched, 16 pages of content, Risograph printed by Pegacorn Press</b><br />

<b><br /></b></div>
<b>Since being reproduced in <a href="http://www.wildfermentation.com/the-art-of-fermentation/" target="_blank">Sandor Katz's new, and truly amazing book, <i>The Art of Fermentation</i>,</a> (Chelsea Green, 2012) it's time to bring this
favorite poster back. In celebration, a new edition has been printed on
the Risograph this week and it's a great gift for anyone who is into
anything fermented. </b><b>As a total side note, I completely recommend
the book itself- and not only because another illustration of mine was
used as borders on the cover and in the book (yeah!)- but because
Sandy's love of fermenting is completely contagious and will change your
life, and taste buds, forever. He really is a gem! It was his book, <a href="http://www.wildfermentation.com/wild-fermentation/" target="_blank"><i>Wild Fermentation</i></a>, that inspired this poster to begin with.</b><div style="text-align: center;">

<div style="text-align: center;">
<b>A 3
color print (blue, burgundy, and black) on a very light gray paper (the
same type that I use for my yearly calendars), it's legal sized, which
is 8.5" X 14." </b></div>

<b><br /></b></div>

My pops, who has been seriously ill for many years now, is entering the final stages of his life- as one can expect, it's been a sad and hard process. I've gotten a lot of quality time in with him and am making peace/trying to accept the inevitable, but honestly, there's definitely been those moments where I've thought I might crumble. </span><span class="Apple-style-span" style="line-height: 16px;">My poor dad- he's seriously gone through some hard-ass-shit! Even in the worst times though, this man can rally and to this day, he continues to inspire me with his dedication to life, humanity, and to always seeking/exploring/desiring more knowledge, even despite his failing health. They experience it all, or not, but they dare not say it, and they remain out-of-sync. In his performances, multi-hyphenate artist Brontez Purnell sees things that rarely anyone identifies. And when he says it, the audience is left breathless, shocked by mirrors of recognition and familiarity.</span><span class="Apple-style-span" style="line-height: 16px;">Purnell produced his first zine, “Schlepp Fanzine,” from his childhood home in Alabama. Since then, he moved to Tennessee and then to California to bring his original voice to music, dance, and the written word. In Oakland, he produced his next zine, Fag School, filled with filth, awe, and wonder. Because of his magnetic presence and lurid but honest portrayals of punk rock-infused queer life, Purnell has become somewhat of a star on the literary-reading circuit. His writing has appeared in Maximum Rock’N’Roll, the online edition of Jigsaw, and Mary: Literary. He also can be seen bringing his combination of truth-telling and heart to his punk rock band, The Younger Lovers.</span><span class="Apple-style-span" style="line-height: 16px;">Purnell is not queercore – he is Brontez. Through all of his evolving art, he is in the world as himself.
